When it comes to classifying metals, copper is often viewed as more of an industrial commodity than it is a precious metal option. Copper is one of the few metals that naturally occurs in the Earth’s crust, and was first used by early humans as far back as 8,000 BC. The first use of the metal smelted into an ore occurred three thousand years later in 5,000 BC.
The name “copper” wasn’t used by those early humans though, as it wasn’t until the Roman era that an official name was assigned to the metal. Mined primarily from the island of Cyprus during this period, it was known as AES CYPRIUM, or metal of Cyprus. Later on, this was corrupted into CUPRUM in Latin.
