2020 - Royal Canadian Mint - 2oz. - The Kraken - Folklore Series
Masterly crafted from the Royal Canadian Mint comes a terrifying series bringing to life the mysterious mythical creatures that lurk the Nordic seas. The exceptional relief of this stunning 2 oz Silver coin portrays the Kraken attacking a ship.
There was a time in history when the mere mention of the Kraken sent chills down a mariner’s spine. The legendary beast was known for dragging ships of all sizes down to the watery depths of Davy Jone’s Locker.
Kraken comes from the Norwegian word krake, which is probably related to the German krake, which means octopus. Accounts disagree on the size of the beast, but one thing is certain, it is huge.
Legend says that the sea monster enjoys solitude and resides deep on the ocean floor. It uses its tentacles to stay tethered to the bottom and when it is hunting for food. The beast will only surface in warm weather or when disturbed.
For as long as ships have sailed the seas, monsters have risen from the depths to strike terror in people’s hearts. One of the most frightening is the Kraken, a massive sea monster with tentacles so large, it can easily destroy an entire vessel, and drag it beneath the waves. From the Nordic countries to Greenland, South Africa and New Zealand, the Kraken appears on sea charts and in European lore as early as 1555.
