1890-S Morgan Silver Dollar XF
End Of The Frontier Morgan Silver Dollar
Historians may have declared that the end of the great Western Frontier was in 1890, but these Wild West 90% Morgan Silver Dollars struck at the fabled San Francisco Mint still jingled in the saddlebags of rugged cowboys, ranchers, and saloon keepers in the Western United States well into the 1900s. These big silver coins may have fallen out of favor with the city folks out East, but they were still very popular in the West — even if it wasn’t very “Wild” anymore.
The Official End Of The Wild West
By the Turn of the Century, the American West was basically settled. The Oklahoma Land Rush had gobbled up Indian territory, railroads stretched from coast to coast and the influx of homesteaders, ranchers and miners had swelled the population to the point that the 1890 Census proclaimed that the West was closed. As if to punctuate the end of the frontier, one last tragic series of events unfolded when famed Lakota Sioux leader Sitting Bull was killed by Indian Police. His death led to the Wounded Knee Massacre two weeks later on December 29, 1890 when 153 Lakota were killed by the troopers of the U.S. 7th Cavalry while they attempted to disarm them. In a twist of irony, the 7th Cavalry was the same outfit led by Lt. Colonel George Armstrong Custer at the Battle of the Little Bighorn 14 years earlier when five companies under his immediate command were wiped out by Lakota and Cheyenne warriors.

COIN HIGHLIGHTS:
- AMERICA’S MOST POPULAR COIN – The Morgan Silver Dollar — so named for its designer, U.S. Mint Assistant Engraver George T. Morgan — has stood the test of time. Struck from 1878-1904 and again in 1921, it was the coin of America’s “Wild West” and jingled in the coin purses of gamblers, gunfighters, soldiers and dance hall girls.
- CLASSIC DESIGNS – Morgan’s historic design depicts a profile of Lady Liberty on the obverse while the reverse features an eagle with outstretched wings. The model used for Liberty was Miss Anna Williams of Philadelphia, who Morgan declared to have the most perfect feminine profile he had ever seen.
- STRUCK IN GLEAMING AMERICAN SILVER – Struck in 26.73 grams of 90% fine silver from the famous Comstock Lode, the Morgan Silver Dollar is a big coin 38.1 mm in diameter. When this coin was plunked down on a counter, its weight meant real money, pure and simple.
- LEGAL TENDER SILVER DOLLAR – Morgans were $1 legal tender and struck during the heyday of America’s Wild West era where coins were overwhelmingly preferred over paper currency.
- NICE EXTREMELY FINE CONDITION – Your 1890-S Morgan Silver Dollar will come in nice collector-grade Extremely Fine (XF) condition.
- THE CASE OF THE DISAPPEARING MORGANS – While millions of Morgan Silver Dollars were struck from 1878 through 1921, massive silver meltings and the ravages of time have taken their toll. Today coin experts believe that only 15% of all Morgans ever struck remain in existence!
